Why The best South African wedding photographers insist on Engagement Photoshoots
It’s true, the best South African wedding photographers know they have the advantage of almost 8 months of South African summer to capture love stories. They also know the importance of a pre-wedding photoshoot – and let’s be honest, what’s better than a whimsical golden-hour engagement shoot.
Engagement photography is one of my favourite ways to get to know my newly (or long) engaged couple. Not only do I get a glimpse of their romance, but it’s also a brilliant ice breaker into the world of photography for them.
Often, it’s the very first time (for at least one of the pair) in front of the camera, and usually their engagement photoshoot is the first time they’re together in front of the camera.
After the photoshoot couples leave feeling even more excited about their wedding and like “seasoned pros” in front of the camera.
That’s not to say they’ve mastered the art of perfect posing, but rather that they no longer notice the camera pointed at them… and in my experience, that makes for the best wedding and engagement photography. The spontaneous kind that captures the way they are when they’re alone.
I first met Adrian and Maxine 2 months before their nuptials. After weeks of weather induced postponements, I could finally get a glimpse of the love this special duo shared. We connected instantly, and within a matter of minutes it felt like I was taking a stroll in the park with long-time friends.
After a few quick tips, they forgot I was there. I toured them to all my favourite “secret spots”, as they simply basked in each other.
Years later when they dust the pages off their wedding album (with their grandkids propped up on their lap), I want them to remember exactly how they felt months before they got married (all those years ago).
After a morning that threatened the onset of rain, the sun broke into a beautiful golden afternoon. The light was perfect and the scenery couldn’t have been better as the rays of sun bounced off the bush veld. Here are just a few of my favourite moments from their engagement photoshoot.
